Utah LPNs and RNs Wanted: Find the Right Schools
Serious Demand for Licensed Nurses in the State
Almost every state suffers from the deepening nursing void, but Utah is one of the hardest hit. Even more reason to seek a school and job in-state. Where need is greatest you'll find rock solid career ladders and increasingly attractive compensation packages.
It's simple really: here's a list of accredited campus-based nursing programs in Utah, over a dozen of them. Find those that fit your career goals and find out what it takes to get in and get on with a good career, either as an RN or LPN.
Nursing Schools: Quickly Narrow Your Search
You have two licenses to choose from in nursing: registered nurse and licensed practical nurse. RNs are much more plentiful and it's a preferred license, but LPNs can be on the job in much less time AND still have the career flexibility to migrate up to an RN license any time they're ready. Narrow your search to technical and vocational schools for LPN tracks. But look to hospitals, community colleges, and four-year colleges and universities for RN nursing tracks.
Degree levels for professional nurses include: diploma (quite rare), Associates, BSN, MSN, and PhD. In between you'll find a crowd of fast-track or accelerated programs, post-grad specialty certificates and ultra-specialized advanced practice nursing degrees like nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, and nurse midwife. Find diploma programs at hospital nursing programs. Stick to four-year colleges and universities for baccalaureate and graduate nursing degrees.
Job Scene for Nurses in Utah
Across Utah you'll find 35 hospitals, most of which are small and add up to a total of close to 4,000 patient beds to staff.* AND it's one of the hardest hit for lack of nurses. Difficulty is that while hospitals remain the biggest employer of nurses in the country, there are so many more areas of healthcare needy for nurses, as well. If you're really on the ball, you should keep some of these nurse employers in mind: long-term and assisted care facilities, school systems and large businesses, corrections, outpatient specialty clinics, and doctors — offices. Non-patient care nurses — jobs are available in insurance and pharmaceutical companies, case management jobs, and in legal nursing.
