Find Out How to Enroll in a Colorado Nursing School
Search for Schools that Meet Your Goals
Recent nursing statistics in Colorado show over 52,000 registered nurses and over 8,000 LPNs.(1) Still by most accounts the state is pushing hard to stave off the nursing shortage. Colorado is a really cool place to live and because of that it's bursting at the seams population-wise. That's good for most businesses and industry, but it has begun to put additional stress on the healthcare, and specifically nursing, industry.
Nursing schools are wooing would-be students to traditional and new-age nursing programs. You'll find not only the campus-based programs, but many more schools have added selections of online degrees. Distance education for nurses does two things: it casts a wider net for students at a bigger distance and it more appropriately fit the needs of working RNs or other working adults without the freedom to make it to campus a few days a week, evening or otherwise. Online education options span from diplomas, ASN, BSN, MSN, graduate certificates and even Ph.D programs.
Keep your goals in mind when searching for a nursing program at a Colorado school. And explore alternative options.
Salaries and Job Opportunities
Here's some information you may wish to consider while planning your nursing career strategy:
Salaries for basic staff RNs in Denver and Boulder average between $57,000 and $69,000. These reflect the earnings of the bulk of general staff RNs without extra degrees and outside of more challenging specialties. For example, RNs that work in ICU care may start a bit higher--$59,000 to $69,000; and RNs in home care can top out a bit higher-- $71,000. (2) The point is that your career earning potential is driven by a number of factors including zip code, type of care facility, practice specialty and experience.
Out of the 35 urban and 39 rural hospitals (3) in the state you'll have plenty of opportunity to mine the best jobs going. Of course nurses that sign-on for lucrative travel assignments or those that are flexible enough to work on a per diem basis, pocket more money. Push your experience into fields like nursing anesthesia and nurse practice and you stand to earn exponentially more in Colorado.
