Traditional, Blended, and Online Degrees
Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia has become well recognized as a Baptist institution, largely under the direction of Dr. Jerry Falwell. The school's hard and fast devotion to Scriptural teachings has, at times, launched it into the media limelight, particularly when those beliefs put it in opposition to certain social and political factions.
History and Controversy
However controversial this university has been, it is as well recognized for its wide assortment of traditional, blended, and distance learning programs. Since it's founding in 1971, the university-originally known as Liberty Baptist College-had experienced an explosion of new students, perhaps due to new distance learning opportunities. This is a primary reason that many traditional colleges and universities explore online degree programs-the good fortune to open higher education, as well as Christian beliefs-to non-traditional students well outside the benefit of campus-based degrees.
Academics
LU confers Associates, Bachelors, and Masters degrees, as well as doctorates in counseling, education, and ministry. Academic colleges and schools include: College of Arts and Sciences, Helms School of Government, School of Communication, School of Business, School of Religion, School of Education, and School of Engineering and Computational Sciences. Between the traditional campus and the very popular distance program, LU now serves over 20,000 students at any one time.
LU boasts a list of "Distinctives" that include low tuition in comparison to other schools, dress and conduct codes, to which resident students must adhere, an undying Christian-centered educational system that literally interprets Biblical teachings.
Online Programs
The distance-learning program targets those students whose situations, both work and family, preclude them from entering into a campus-based program, but wish to advance their careers with online studies within the context of a Christ-centered curriculum. Online degree programs are offered in Business, Education, Counseling, Seminary, and Nursing. The on-campus nursing school offers a BSN, MSN, and a Parish Nurse degree.
Working nurses may choose from LU's online RN-BSN completion program, or the Masters of Science in Nursing. The MSN is divided into two concentrations: MSN Acute Care and MSN Community Health. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredits the nursing program.
