Tips for Finding Nursing Scholarships
Nursing scholarships create opportunity. They build a financial bridge allowing more nursing students to reach and receive the educational opportunities necessary for retaining a sharp, competitive edge in modern health care.
Tips to increase your own chances of receiving a nursing scholarship:
- Start searching early. Every scholarship or contest will have a deadline, and they happen throughout the year. Set calendar reminders and make sure all necessary applications are submitted well before the deadlines. Understand that many decisions for the Fall semesters will be made in the Spring, or even sooner. Being proactive in a scholarship quest is what often separates the winners from the rest.
- Be exhaustive. There are a variety of different scholarships offered in any school — from merit-based rewards to need-based subsidies. There are also federal programs and there might be state programs; there might be offers unique to a number of different candidates for a variety of reasons. There are scholarships offered from specific organizations or designated for specific uses. Many hospitals provide resources for ongoing education.Ultimately, which programs, contests or awards you might qualify for depends on a number of variables. Leave no stone unturned in your effort to find scholarship opportunities.
- Be precise. Every scholarship application process may require a slightly different application from you. Make sure that each entry is handled with care, and is submitted error-free. A technicality should never knock you out of the running. Don't use a broad-stroke approach to the applications, as this could cause sloppiness. Be precise, and increase your chances.
- Don't stop now. Many scholarships and aid programs can be used in conjunction with (or despite receiving) others. Just because you won a good scholarship does not mean you can't win more money. As a nursing student, this means you should be very aggressive in applying for every possible award for which you'd qualify. It is entirely possible to defray many of the costs of higher education through scholarships and aid — many students do it successfully every year. To what extent external resources are utilized becomes in large part, a direct reflection on the personal drive propelling each individual. Don't stop — there are typically many wonderful chances out there for any student.
What Makes You So Special?
Scholarships are typically created to celebrate or honor something specific about the applicant. Knowing what some of these characteristics are can help you find more scholarship opportunities.
